Syria lies in ruins after years of fighting. Control over the last remaining factories and functional pieces of infrastructure are vital to the ensured financial support of the war effort. The oil fields of Shapur and its intact refinery are now a highly contested target for both the Syrian government forces and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (short ISIS). Both factions have launched an offensive to secure these important resources. Experienced russian contractors from Grupa Vagnera are supporting the offensive of the Syrian government forces. Chechen Jihadi volunteers have a long history of fighting in the middle east for religious reasons and have joined ISIS in their struggle for control over the oil fields at Shapur.
