As a result of a crippling terrorist attack against the Nizhnevartovsk Oil Field in Russian Siberia, the USSR is faced with a looming fuel crisis on top of rising instability within the nation. The Politburo of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union have devised a plan, to secure and to then make use the vast oil fields of the Persian gulf, however, this action will almost definitely warrant a NATO response. The Politburo believe the NATO alliance to be a weakened state, and through launching a surprise offensive against West Germany it is believed by the hawks with the Politburo that scoring this victory against NATO will allow the USSR to secure a favourable deal over rights to Persian oil.

The Soviet operation to seize control over Iceland, Operation Polar Glory, had been a success whilst NATO naval assets had sustained several setbacks, namely the striking of the Nimitz Carrier Group by ASMs. However, after weeks of accurate bombing and attrition against its MiG 29 squadrons by NATO forces and the campaign in Germany stalled, NATO has launched Operation Nordic Hammer.

Phase I of Nordic Hammer saw the downing of almost every MiG 29 airframe still present on Iceland and further bombing of Soviet air defences, being a resounding success for NATO. Phase II will see NATO forces landing all over Iceland with the goal of seizing back control over key positions on the island, namely Keflavík Airbase, and the towns of Keflavík and Reykjavík.

Day 30 - 14th July 1987 : Following the successful completion of Phase I, and the subsequent destruction of the majority of Soviet aircraft based in Iceland, NATO forces begin Phase II, the naval invasion of Iceland.
