Operation Arctic Fox (German: Unternehmen Polarfuchs) was part of the larger German-Finnish military Operation Silver Fox that lasted from 29th of June to the 17th of November 1941 on the Eastern Front against the Soviet Union. The objective of the offensive was to cut off and capture the key Soviet port of Murmansk through attacks initiating from Finnish and Norwegian territory.
The primary objective of Operation Arctic Fox was to conduct a direct assault in the South of Murmansk around the town of Salla in order to support the main Axis effort in the North. German forces consisted of three divisions, the regular 169th Infantry Division, SS Kampfgruppe Nord and the Finnish 6th Division.
This Operation follows the initial frontal assault of the 169th Infantry Division and SS Kampfgruppe Nord against Soviet positions around Salla.
