The 102. Grenzsicherungskompanie (Kp) (102nd Border Security Company) perform border security activities as Exercise LIONHEART takes place. Exercise Lionheart, a massive British Army mobilization exercise, the largest since World War II, is designed to test the Army's ability to deploy and fight in West Germany against the Warsaw Pact. The three-phase exercise involves over 130,000 British personnel and featured the introduction of new equipment like the Challenger 1 tank and Warrior APC.

East German and Soviet ambassadors have issued formal protests to the exercise taking place so close to the border. Tensions are at an all time high, the whole border is a tinderbox, one small spark whether by design or accidental could be enough to trigger a violent response.

The company must balance various tasks including the protection of local infrastructure, the maintenance of border security and integrity, policing and civil duties, and logistical sustainment for a sizeable force.  The company commander has a difficult task ahead, with various responsibilities that will require his attention simultaneously, all the whole the Warsaw pact forces loiter ominously near the border. 

With regular occurrences of espionage, sabotage, border incursion, and defection, the Weferlingen operating area is one of the most active border sectors outside of Berlin. As such over strength companies have been deployed across all patrol sectors. Each company consists of a joint taskforce of infantry reservists, military police officers, experienced border guards, and light armour and mortar support. Well suited to daily security activities, these companies are not trained nor equipped for all out war, and rely heavily on the promise of West German regular forces, and NATO reinforcements should the worst happen.
