In November 1918, Poland became a sovereign state. The territory of what had become Poland had been a major battleground during World War I and the new country lacked political stability. It had won the hard-fought Polish–Ukrainian War against the West Ukrainian People's Republic by July 1919 but had already become embroiled in new conflicts with Germany (the 1919–1921 Silesian Uprisings) and the January 1919 border conflict with Czechoslovakia. Meanwhile, Soviet Russia focused on thwarting the counterrevolution and the 1918–1925 intervention by the Allied powers. The first clashes between Polish and Soviet forces occurred in autumn and winter 1918/1919, but it took a year and a half for a full-scale war to develop. From late 1919, Lenin, encouraged by the Red Army's civil war victories over the White Russian forces and their Western allies, began to envision the future of world revolution with greater optimism. The Bolsheviks proclaimed the need for the dictatorship of the proletariat and agitated for a worldwide communist community. On 29 April 1920, the Central Committee of the Bolshevik Communist Party of Russia appealed for volunteers for the war with Poland, to defend the Russian republic against a Polish usurpation. Poland's 320 km (200 mi) long northern front was manned by a thin line of 120,000 troops, backed by some 460 artillery pieces, with no strategic reserves. This approach to holding ground harked back to the World War I practice of establishing a fortified line of defense. The Polish–Soviet front, however, bore little resemblance to that war's conditions, as it was weakly manned, supported with inadequate artillery, and had almost no fortifications. Such arrangement allowed the Soviets to attain numerical superiority at strategically crucial locations. Against the Polish line, the Red Army gathered its Western Front led by Tukhachevsky. Its numbers exceeded 108,000 infantry and 11,000 cavalry, supported by 722 artillery pieces and 2,913 machine guns.

n early January 1919, as the occupying German forces were handing Vilnius over to the Red Army, Scouts grouped in Vilnius Self-Defense units incorporated into the reborn Polish Army in November clashed with the Bolsheviks. This was likely the Scouts' first battle of the war. Many of the older members of the organization already had combat experience, having served between 1914 and 1918. The younger ones were excellent soldiers: they were characterized by high morale and discipline, and had already acquired skills useful in the military – efficient movement in the field, reconnaissance, and providing medical assistance. When the war with the Bolsheviks entered its decisive phase in the summer of 1920, and enemy advances began to threaten Warsaw, and in the event of an enemy victory – all of Europe, the ZHP leadership ordered a general mobilization of Scouts. Scouts over the age of 18 could join the Volunteer Army. Approximately 9,000 scouts fought in regular Polish Army units and Volunteer Army regiments. Younger scouts and girl scouts en masse volunteered for auxiliary services, serving as medics, messengers, postal workers, and many other roles. Their number was estimated at 15,000.

This mission BLUFOR will be a withdrawing Polish force that must make their way towards friendly lines with bolshevik troops hot on their tracks. Situation will be very difficult to manage for commander due to unusual placement of the enemy and their axis of attack.
